The objective was to analyze the benefits of calculation using the abacus to improve concentration, attention, memory, perceptual attitudes and creativity in primary school children. Methods: A total of 68 children participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial. Children were randomized into control group (n = 34) and experimental group (n = 34). The questionnaires used were the D2 test: attention and concentration, the CARAS-R test: perception of differences, the immediate auditory memory test (MAI) and the CREA test: creative intelligence. Results: significant improvements in cognitive parameters of concentration, memory, perceptual attitudes and creativity could be observed after the abacus intervention. Conclusions: the present study carried out in children aged between 7 and 11 years, shows that a calculation program based on the use of the abacus for 8 weeks, has beneficial effects on cognitive abilities of concentration, immediate auditory memory, perceptual attitudes and creativity.
