Influence of Cervantes’ Don Quixote in John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces

Abstract

(ES) En ocasiones se hace evidente que Ignatius Reilly, tan enigmático como a la vez tan despreciable, comparte con la figura de don Quijote más de lo que pueda parecer a simple vista. La estructura episódica de la novela se asemeja a la novela picaresca, y sin embargo exhibe una complejidad narrativa encomiable mediante el uso de técnicas como el dialogismo o el perspectivismo más propias de la escritura cervantina. Además, el idealismo quijotesco de Ignatius le llevará a vivir una serie de aventuras desternillantes por la ciudad de Nueva Orleans mientras avanza en su peregrinaje por el mundo laboral. Por todo esto, la presente disertación se centra en analizar las posibles influencias ejercidas por la novela de Cervantes en la obra de John Kennedy Toole La Conjura de los Necios.

(EN) At times it becomes clear that Ignatius Reilly, as enigmatic as he is despicable, shares more with the figure of Don Quixote than might appear at first glance. The episodic structure of the story resembles the picaresque novel, and yet it exhibits a commendable narrative complexity through the use of techniques such as dialogism or perspectivism which are more typical of Cervantes' writing. In addition, Ignatius' quixotic idealism will lead him to live a series of hilarious adventures in the city of New Orleans as he advances in his pilgrimage through the working system. For all these reasons, this dissertation focuses on analysing the possible influences exerted by Cervantes' novel on John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces.
