Considering that the subjunctive mood is a verb mood widely used in Spanish to express desires and emotions, this project wants to find out when and how it is used not only in Spanish but also in English. Therefore, the main aim of this project is to find out how often the subjunctive is used in both languages, Spanish and English, considering whether translation from one language to the other influences this usage and to establish a classification of the subjunctive cases found. To this end, some of the cases of the subjunctive found in the book ‘New Penguin Parallel Text - Short Stories in Spanish - Cuentos en Español’ edited by John R. King are analyzed by means of a practical section which includes 109 Spanish sentences together with their English translation, classified according to some of their characteristics. The research concludes that although it is known that the use of the subjunctive is not widely used in English, it appears frequently as can be seen throughout the study.
