The presence of a dog can serve as support when facing a social stress situations, causing a decrease of different psychophysiological and subjective variables linked to this situation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the decrease of these variables in function of the presence or not of a dog during this social stress situation. A sample of 36 undergraduate students was given the TSST (Trier Social Stress Test) protocol to analyze in what measure the interaction with a dog could affect stress levels, compared to the absence of such interaction. Measurements of heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety were taken before exposing participants to the stressful situation at the end of that stressful situation and after a recovery period. The results indicate that the presence of the animal reduces stress level, although this decrease appears to be especially significant from the subjective point of view of the participants.
