The founding of the Collegiate Church of Santiago in Castellar, Jaen, is one of the most important works of artistic patronage in the diocese of Jaen in the 17th century. It was commissioned at the behest of don Mendo de Benavides, bishop of Cartagena and a prominent member of the House of Benavides -lords of Santisteban del Puerto- the most notable lineage in the county. Erecting the church also involved building an annexed school as a charitable work for the town and the region. While initially conceived as a chapel, it was issued the rank of collegiate church soon after by virtue of two papal bulls. Responsibility for the construction work fell on Juan de Aranda Salazar, master builder of the Jaen Cathedral and overseer of the works commissioned by the diocese during the pontificate of don Baltasar Moscoso y Sandoval, cardinal and bishop of Jaen, who would export his architectural language to these domains.
