In this paper the reasons for universal linguistic variability have been briefly explained, along with the historical background that has influenced the English of North America and of the state of Texas. The characteristic Southern dialect spoken in Texas has been analyzed in some depth, considering all allophonic variants, grammatical phenomena and some lexical particularities which are expected to be found in the population of the state. Apart from this, the General American accent has also been described in contrast to Received Pronunciation in order to offer a referent for comparison in terms of phonetics and prosody. Finally, to supplement the theoretical data provided, a contrastive phonetic analysis of a short speech by two famous actors born in different parts of Texas has been carried out.
