Pascual de Gayangos y Arce is a key figure for Andalusian studies, since he was a pioneer of Spanish Arabism and archetype of the nineteenth-century intellectuals. Throughout his professional career he was named member of high level charges, and he achieved considerable respect, as far as the academic field is concerned. His great interest in the History of Spain was what led him to carry out his masterpiece The History of the Mohammedan dynasties in Spain, (a translation-summary of the al-Maqqari encyclopedia on al-Andalus, 1577-1632, with other sources), which represented an advance in the knowledge of al-Andalus due to the lack of documentation at that time. The aim of this FDP is to analyse and translate the first section of his work that corresponds to the prologue “The Translator’s Preface”. In addition, the figures of the most renowned characters that appear throughout the translation will be dealt with, as well as a bio-bibliographic study of the author.
