[EN]Duolingo is a successful application offering free gamified language courses to its worldwide user base. In order to start playing, users simply sign up and select a target language and their mother tongue. This paper aims to analyze Duolingo’s twofold nature as a game and a language course. Firstly, a full description of the application will be undertaken in order to determine the features that keep players motivated at all times. Next, a thorough analysis of the Spanish course for English speakers will reveal the contents of the course and how they are taught, paying special attention to how linguistic competences and language activities are developed. The results will weigh up the relative advantages and disadvantages of using such a tool and propose some recommendations to its users, whether they are teachers or learners.
