Improving NP Postmodification: A Task-Based Proposal for 4th Year CSE Students

Resumen
[ES]La postmodificación en los sintagmas nominales es un problema para los estudiantes de inglés como
lengua extranjera. Para entender el uso de los sintagmas nominales con postmodificación utilizados por
estudiantes españoles, este TFM tiene tres partes. Primeramente, se ha llevado a cabo una revisión
bibliográfica sobre la postmodificación en los sintagmas nominales. Asimismo, se ha analizado un corpus
de aprendices compuesto de 60 textos de B2 sacados del corpus de aprendiz FineDesc. Los resultados
obtenidos revelan que los estudiantes españoles utilizan más las oraciones relativas y los sintagmas
preposicionales que otros tipos de postmodificación. Se han encontrado diferencias en el uso de
postmodificadores dependiendo del tipo de texto. Finalmente, los resultados han sido utilizados para
diseñar una propuesta didáctica, que sigue una metodología basada en tareas para mejorar el uso de la
postmodificación en los sintagmas nominales en dos tipos de texto en el nivel de B2.
[EN]Postmodification in noun phrases seems to be an obstacle for students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). To understand the use of postmodified noun phrases by Spanish EFL students, this MA Dissertation has been divided into three main parts. First, a literature review of noun phrase postmodification has been completed. Second, a learner corpus-based analysis of 60 written texts at B2 level taken from the FineDesc learner corpus has been done. The results obtained show that L1 Spanish learners of English at B2 level tend to use relative clauses and prepositional phrases much more frequently than the other types of postmodifiers. Differences in the type of NP postmodification has also been found depending on the text type written. The results have been used to inform a didactic proposal, which follows a task-based approach to help students improve their use of NP postmodification in two text types at CEFR B2 level.
