Teaching English to Autistic Students of Spanish Primary School Education

Abstract

[ES]Dada la evolución del término “espectro autista”, son grandes los avances que se han hecho dentro del ámbito educativo y social propiciando un mejor diagnóstico y tratamiento que ha generado resultados positivos en su desarrollo y aprendizaje. No obstante, aún queda camino por recorrer en cuanto a términos de inclusión y atención hacia los niños con TEA, especialmente en edades tempranas como es la educación primaria. A lo largo de este trabajo final de Máster indagaremos tanto en las particularidades del término “autismo” como en las barreras que se encuentran tales niños y que deberían tenerse en cuenta antes de comenzar a enseñarles una lengua extranjera. Proponemos a continuación una unidad didáctica en la que se promueve un compromiso de responsabilidad que les permita adquirir ciertas habilidades lingüísticas y sociales que son esenciales para una futura vida adulta satisfactoria. De esta manera, teniendo en cuenta la importancia de los idiomas como vehículo de comunicación, se demostrará la capacidad de aprendizaje de los niños con autismo considerando sus características a través de una diversidad metodológica efectiva

[EN]As the term "Autism Spectrum Disorder” has evolved, there have been great advances in the educational and social fields, promoting better diagnosis and treatment which has generated positive results in development and learning. Notwithstanding, there is still a long journey to be made in terms of inclusion and attention to children with ASD, especially at early ages such as in primary education. This Master’s Dissertation investigates the idiosyncrasies of the term “Autism” as well as the learning barriers and difficulties that should be borne in mind before attempting to teach them. A didactic unit is then proposed, paying attention to the teaching of a foreign language to an autistic child, encouraging a commitment to a responsibility that will allow the acquisition of certain linguistic and social skills which are essential for a satisfactory future adult life. Thus, taking into account the importance of foreign languages as a vehicle of communication and the learning capacity of children with Autism, an effective methodological diversity will be demonstrated.
