Fortificaciones en las costas peninsulares del Mediterráneo en el siglo XVI: la defensa frente a ataques piráticos

Resumen
El presente trabajo pretende exponer el desarrollo de la actuación llevada a cabo por Felipe II para defender la costa de ataques de piratería y corso durante el siglo XVI. Se explicará el proyecto de realizar un cinturón defensivo en la parte sur y el levante de la Península Ibérica. En primer lugar se contextualizará la situación costera de la Península Ibérica exponiendo antecedentes históricos. Se realizará una diferencia geográfica dividiendo la costa mediterránea en la costa de Andalucía, costa de Valencia y costa de Murcia, explicando el proceso de construcción y la distribución de las torres vigía del siglo XVI a lo largo del litoral. Posteriormente, para comprender la necesidad de fortificar la costa, se expone una breve explicación del fenómeno de piratería y corso turcoberberísco. Se establece una tipología dependiendo de la planta y el alzado de estas, terminando con un inciso en la situación actual de las torres vigías en términos generales.
The present paper tries to expose the development of the action carried out by Felipe II to defend the coast from piracy and plunder attacks during the XVI century. Also, It will be explained the project of the construction of a defensive belt in the southern and eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Firstly, the coastal situation of the Iberian Peninsula will be contextualized, exposing historical antecedents. A geographical difference will be made dividing the Mediterranean coast into the Andalusian coast, the Valencian coast and the Murcian coast explaining the construction process and the distribution of the 16th century watchtowers along the coast. Later, in order to understand the need to fortify the coast, a brief explanation of the phenomenon of piracy and plunder turkberberism is exposed. A typology is established depending on the shape and the elevation of these, ending with a subsection on the current situation of the watchtowers in general terms.
