AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION OF CULTURAL REFERENCES IN THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES OF OCHO APELLIDOS VASCOS

Resumen
[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo de Fin de Master consiste en clasificar las referencias culturales encontradas en la comedia española Ocho apellidos vascos y analizar las soluciones de traducción utilizadas para su subtitulación al inglés. Para ello, se ha utilizado un corpus formado por las referencias culturales encontradas en la versión original, así como su traducción al inglés. El análisis se ha basado
principalmente en establecer los tipos de referencias culturales encontradas y en determinar las
soluciones por las que ha optado el traductor para traducirlas. Se ha estudiado también si podría
establecerse una posible relación entre el tipo de referencia y la estrategia de traducción empleada. Los
resultados que se han obtenido muestran que el traductor ha llevado a cabo una traducción
extranjerizante pero siempre intentando mantener el tono humorístico original en el texto meta. Además,
las restricciones derivadas de la subtitulación parecen haber influenciado algunas de sus decisiones.
[EN] This MA thesis aims to classify the cultural references found in the Spanish comedy film Ocho apellidos vascos and to analyse the translation solutions used for their translation in the English subtitles. To do this, a corpus consisting of the cultural references found in the original version as well as their translation into English has been used. The analysis has been based mainly on establishing the types of cultural references that have been found and determining the solutions chosen by the translator in order to translate them. It was also studied whether a possible relation could be established between the type of cultural reference and the translation solution used. The results of this study show that the translator has carried out a foreignizing translation but always trying to maintain the original humorous load in the target text. Moreover, the subtitling restrictions seem to have influenced some of the translator’s decisions.
