TEACHING ENGLISH THROUGH CULTURE: A DIDACTIC PROPOSAL

Resumen
[ES]La lengua inglesa se ha convertido en el idioma universal. Según Gnutzmann (2012) el 80% de los actos comunicativos en lengua inglesa se llevan a cabo entre hablantes no nativos lo que nos lleva a reconsiderar el concepto de Competencia Comunicativa, de manera que satisfaga esta nueva realidad. No solo debemos reflexionar sobre qué entendemos por Competencia Comunicativa, además debemos tener en cuenta sus implicaciones en la Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera. El Consejo Europeo es conocedor de este nuevo escenario por lo que ha desarrollado políticas e implementado numerosas acciones encaminadas a clarificar qué es la Competencia Comunicativa y cómo se debe abordar desde el ámbito educativo. En cuanto a la primera cuestión, se antoja necesario considerar la dimensión cultural en los intercambios comunicativos pues es un factor elemental para la comprensión y el entendimiento. Esto nos dirige hacia un nuevo enfoque intercultural en la Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera.
[EN]The English language has become a Global Language. According to Gnutzmann (2012) 80% of the communicative acts in English language are conducted between non-native speakers which leads us to reconsider the concept of Communicative Competence, so that it meets this new reality. We must not only think about what we understand by Communicative Competence, we must also take into account its implications for the teaching of English as a Foreign Language. The European Council is aware of this new scenario so that it has developed policies and implemented several actions aimed at clarifying what Communicative Competence is and how it must be approached from the field of Education. As regards the first question, it seems to be necessary consider the cultural dimension in communicative exchanges because is an essential element implied in understanding and comprehension. This leads us to a new intercultural approach in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.
