This review is just another reason to forget the idea that the immune system works autonomously. The chronic effects of psychological stress are closely related to immune reactions that are detrimental to health. Systems such as the Nervous System, the Immune System and the Endocrine System are all involved in the response to stress, and all of them are involved in the pathophysiological consequences of chronic stress. Numerous studies have investigated this association and have found relevant conclusions. There is a peripheral immunosuppression when exposed to prolonged stress and an increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines at the neurological level that is involved in the development and progression of diseases and mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress
