Duality in Iboland: Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God

Abstract

Nigerian literature has contributed to English literature, fundamentally in postcolonial period. In this frame, the figure of writer Chinua Achebe emerges as the most important writer in order to study and understand the evolution of Nigerian population in civil and cultural terms throughout the arrival and the settlement of the British administrations. Two clear examples of novels that help to understand the conditions in Nigeria in this period are Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God. Both of them introduce the culture, traditions, routines and religion of the Ibo community. However, the narrations of the novels show the structure of the Ibo society from different points of view and the contradictions in which the society falls due to the cultural clash with the British population. As a result, the double conditions in which the society is involved will cause the tragic end of the main characters of the novels. These final events that Okonkwo and Ezeulu suffer could be considered as a symbol of the disappearance of the Ibo society as Achebe knew it.La literatura Nigeriana ha contribuido a la literatura en lengua inglesa, fundamentalmente en el periodo postcolonial. En este marco, la figura del escritor Chinua Achebe emerge como el escritor más importante para estudiar y entender la evolución de la población nigeriana en términos civiles y culturales a lo largo de la llegada y asentamiento de las autoridades británicas. Dos claros ejemplos que ayudan a entender las condiciones en Nigeria durante esta época son Things Fall Apart y Arrow of God. Ambas novelas introducen la cultura, tradiciones, rutinas y religión de la comunidad Ibo. Sin embargo, las narraciones de las novelas muestran la estructura de la sociedad Ibo desde diferentes puntos de vista y las contradicciones en las que se ve envuelta debido al choque cultural con la población británica. Como resultado, las condiciones duales en las que se ve envuelta la sociedad causaran un final trágico para los personajes principales de las novelas. Estos eventos finales que Okonkwo y Ezeulu sufre pueden ser consideradas como un símbolo de la desaparición de la sociedad Ibo tal y como la conocía Achebe.
