METHODS AND APPROACHES IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND THEIR APPLICATION IN THE CLASSROOM

Abstract

El uso de métodos de aprendizaje y enseñanza en lengua extranjera es un componente clave para el desarrollo óptimo de las habilidades y competencias del lenguaje en los estudiantes. Aprender y usar un idioma extranjero con la finalidad de comunicarse e interactuar con personas que hablan un idioma diferente y la creciente moda de aprender idiomas ha contribuido a la imperiosa necesidad de aprender lenguas extranjeras. Por lo tanto, los programas educativos de enseñanza de idiomas en centros escolares y los profesores de idiomas deben contribuir a mejorar el conocimiento de los alumnos y el uso óptimo de un segundo idioma teniendo en cuenta las cinco habilidades del lenguaje. Sin embargo, a pesar de los numerosos métodos de aprendizaje y enseñanza, los profesores de idiomas se enfrentan a una tarea difícil cuando deben enseñar un segundo idioma debido a la falta de tiempo y material en clase y el poco apoyo curricular y administrativo. Este proyecto aborda una nueva perspectiva teniendo en cuenta los diferentes e innovadores métodos que han sido olvidados o están en desuso en clase en el momento en el que los profesores enseñan un segundo idioma a sus alumnos con la finalidad de conseguir que sean capaces de comunicarse o interactuar oralmente o por escrito a la vez que desarrollan las habilidades del lenguaje. Recomendaciones prácticas, opiniones personales y actividades y tareas teniendo en cuenta los diferentes métodos y su uso en clase, así como sus ventajas y desventajas al ponerlos en práctica con alumnos españoles que aprenden inglés como lengua extranjera y que presentan diferentes características, necesidades y gustos son materia de discusión en este proyecto.

The use of foreign language learning and teaching methodologies is a key component for the optimal development of language skills and competences of students. Learning and using a common language in order to communicate and interact with people who speak a different language and the rising trend of learning languages have contributed to an increasing necessity of learning foreign languages. Therefore, foreign language education programs in educational centers and foreign language teachers must contribute to improve the students´ knowledge and the optimal use of a second language taking into account the five language skills. Nevertheless, despite the numerous foreign language learning and teaching methods, foreign language teachers face a difficult task when they have to teach a target language due to the insufficient time and resources in the classroom and the lack of curricular and administrative support. This project deals with a new perspective taking into account different and innovative methods which are forgotten or not used frequently in the class when teachers teach a foreign language to their students with the goal of getting them to communicate or interact in the foreign language orally or written through developing foreign language skills. Practical recommendations, personal opinions and proposed activities and tasks taking into account all the methods and their use, and the advantages and disadvantages of using them in the class with Spanish students learning English as a foreign language who have different characteristics, needs and wants are the subject of discussion in this Research Project.
