[EN]According to the basic premise that the contrastive analysis between two close languages, as Portuguese and Spanish are, is a significant tool to guide the instructional practise of related languages, we shall identify some of the areas to be considered when teaching Spanish as a foreign language to Portuguese-speaking students. Furthermore, we shall present the definitions of some important concepts in this area of study such as transfer, interlanguage, fossilisation and portuñol. In addition, we shall approach the importance of perception of language proximity, implications for learning a close language and possible solutions to the negative effects entailed by this perception. Finally, we shall underline the significance of the cultural competence in the classroom and provide a two-way view by Spaniards and Portuguese on the plentiful shades within the cultural similarities for the improvement of mutual comprehension, with a focus on forms of treatment.
