Cultural motives of obligation and reciprocity to care for an elderly dependent person may be related to negative consequences, such as subjective burden. A systematic review was carried out on the basis of 10 original studies obtained from different databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Cinahl y Cuiden) according to a search string. Inclusion criteria were defined and the analysis of the studies was carried out using the STROBE. The results obtained seem to indicate that obligation related to social demands (external obligation) is positively associated with subjective burden, while obligation based on personal beliefs (internal obligation) protects the informal caregiver from subjective burden. On the other hand, a negative association was found between reciprocity and subjective burden, so that this is a protective effect against the negative consequences of caregiving.
