Resumen
[ES]El descubrimiento en la última década de la tecnología del "microarray" ha supuesto una revolución en los ensayos llevados a cabo en ARN y ADN. En contraposición con los estudios biológicos tradicionales, los “microarrays” permiten medir los niveles de expresión de miles de transcritos de ARN mensajero (ARNm) para conocer el patrón global de expresión génica en una determinada célula, tejido u órgano. Desde su aparición a final del siglo XX, los análisis de “microarrays” de ARN han constituido una herramienta esencial tanto en estudios biológicos como biomédicos por su gran aplicación en diversos campos, siendo imprescindibles en estudios de enfermedades, en ensayos con animales modelo como Drosophila melanogaster y Caenorhabditis elegans e incluso en plantas. Este trabajo proporciona una visión general de la metodología y aplicaciones de los “microarrays” de expresión de ARN en varias áreas de estudio biológico y demuestra que se está convirtiendo en una metodología de vanguardia en la biotecnología y biomedicina.
[EN]The discovery in the last decade of microarray technology has supposed a revolution in RNA and DNA assays. In contrast with traditional biological researches, “microarrays” allow the simultaneous measure of the expression levels of thousands of mRNA transcripts with the aim to know the global mRNA expression level in a cell, tissue or organ. Since it appearance to end of 20th century, RNA microarray analysis has become an essential tool in biological and biomedical studies for it wide application in different fields, being essential in diseases studies, animals model assays as Drosophyla melanogaster and Caernorhabditis elegans and even in plants. This review provides an overview of the methodology and applications of RNA expression “microarrays” in various areas of biological research. This review demonstrated that microarray technology is at the vanguard methodology in biotechnology and biomedicine.
