Lo sublime en la pintura romántica española

Abstract

En el siglo XVIII se da una transformación en el ámbito de la estética con la publicación de distintos tratados filosóficos. Con la divulgación de Indagación filosófica sobre el origen de nuestras ideas acerca de lo sublime y de lo bello de Edmund Burke (1757), la tradicional categoría estética de lo bello queda relegada a un segundo plano por la de lo sublime, cambiando así el panorama artístico. El Romanticismo es el movimiento que mejor lo refleja. La pintura española de este periodo tuvo una intensa producción, y entre todas las manifestaciones pictóricas románticas destacan aquellas que, siguiendo los postulados burkeanos, captaron y transmitieron las características de la sublimidad, si bien se manifiesta de una forma más tenue por el peso de la historia y el tradicionalismo español en comparación con otras culturas septentrionales.

n the eighteenth century there was a transformation of aesthetics with the publication of different philosophical treatises. With the disclosure of Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful by Edmund Burke (1757), the traditional aesthetic cateogry of beauty is relegated by the sublime, thus changing the artistic panorama. Romanticism is the movement that best represents it. Spanish painting of this period had an intense production and, among all the romantic pictorial demonstrations, those that followed the Burkean postulates captured and transmitted the characteristics of sublimity, standing out in a more tenuous way due to the weight of the spanish history and traditionalism compared to other northern cultures.
