An insight into gender issues and cultural ignorance. An analysis of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s short stories and essays.

Abstract

(ES) En la actualidad sigue habiendo cuestiones culturales y de género controvertidas pese a los muchos avances que nuestra sociedad ha experimentado con los años. Estas diferencias se ven claramente reflejadas en la literatura puesto que es sin lugar a dudas el mayor espejo de la humanidad y sus conflictos. En este contexto literario sobresale la autora nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (1977) cuyas obras y ensayos muestran las distintas realidades de las mujeres tanto en África como en la diáspora, narrando sus continuas luchas por sobrevivir en un mundo dominado por los hombres y por la visión occidental del mundo. De este modo, este proyecto analizará algunas de estas cuestiones reflejadas en dos de sus famosos ensayos “We Should All Be Feminists” (2014) y “The Danger of A Single Story” (2009), y en dos de sus célebres historias cortas “On Monday Last Week” (2009) y “The Thing Around Your Neck” (2009)(EN) Nowadays there are still cultural and gender issues that cause controversy despite the many advances our society has undergone over the years. These differences are clearly reflected in literature, since it is undoubtedly the greatest mirror of humanity and its conflicts. In this literary context, the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (1977) stands out. Her works and essays show the different realities of women both in Africa and in the diaspora, recounting their continuous struggles to survive in a world dominated by men and by the Western worldview. In this way, this project will analyse some of these issues as reflected in two of her most famous essays “We Should All Be Feminists” (2014) and “The Danger of A Single Story” (2009) as well as in two of her most well-known short stories: “On Monday Last Week” (2009) and “The Thing Around Your Neck” (2009).
