THE USE OF POETRY FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN OR SECOND LANGUAGE

Abstract

[ES] Este trabajo se centra en el uso de la poesía para enseñar inglés. La integración de la literatura, y en especial de la poesía, en la programación del inglés tiene numerosas ventajas cuando se trata de enseñar inglés a adolescentes. En primer lugar, los poemas son materiales auténticos y por su brevedad, son más fáciles de leer que cualquier otro texto literario. En segundo lugar, forman parte de la cultura inglesa y su lectura puede enriquecer el conocimiento de los alumnos sobre la literatura y la historia inglesa. Asimismo, los poemas son realmente útiles para enseñar estructuras gramaticales y vocabulario, además de para practicar las diferentes destrezas. Por último, el uso de la poesía en el aula puede hacer que aumente la motivación haciendo el proceso de aprendizaje más efectivo. Aunque la lectura de poemas pueda parecer difícil cuando se trata de estudiantes de ingles que tienen niveles bajos o medios, la mayor parte de las dificultades pueden ser solventadas si se aplica la metodología apropiada y si se eligen los poemas de una manera adecuada.

[EN] This project focuses on the use of poetry for teaching English. The integration of literature, and especially of poetry, in the English curriculum has numerous advantages when teaching English to teenagers. Firstly, poems are authentic materials and they are more easily readable because of their brevity than any other literary text. Secondly, they are part of English culture and their reading can enrich students´ knowledge about English literature and history. Besides, poems are most useful for teaching grammatical structures and vocabulary as well as for practising the different skills. Finally, the utilization of poetry in the classroom can enhance motivation in students making the learning process more effective. Although reading poems might seem difficult when it comes to learners of English who have low or intermediate levels, most kind of difficulties can be solved if a proper methodology is applied and if poems are chosen in an adequate way.
