Analysis of the needs of A2-level and B1-level learners in the receptive language skills

Abstract

[ES] Resumen Castellano (máx. 150 palabras) Receptive skills, as opposed to productive ones, are based on the reception and comprehension of a given message on the part of the student. That is why they are often referred to as passive skills. The objectives of this MA thesis were to identify the needs in the receptive skills of 24 students of a private language school, who were going to take their A2-level and B1-level certification exams, and to compare their performance in reading and listening. Moreover, their attitude, perception and motivation towards learning English as a second language were also examined. After inspecting the results obtained from four reading and listening tests and a questionnaire on attitude and motivation, one main conclusion was drawn: despite having a good command of grammar and vocabulary, students still had low reading and listening performance, which might be remedied by implementing new proposals to address reading and listening.

[EN] Las destrezas receptivas, frente a las productivas, están basadas en la recepción y comprensión por parte del aprendiente de un mensaje dado. Es por ello que, a menudo, se les llama destrezas pasivas. Los objetivos de esta tesis fueron identificar las necesidades en las destrezas receptivas de un grupo de 24 estudiantes de un centro de idiomas privado, que iban a realizar sus exámenes de certificación de los niveles A2 y B1. Además, su actitud, percepción y motivación hacia el aprendizaje de inglés como segunda lengua fueron también analizadas. Después de examinar los resultados obtenidos de los cuatro test de comprensión escrita y comprensión oral y del cuestionario sobre actitud y motivación que se realizaron, podemos extraer una conclusión principal: a pesar de tener un buen dominio de gramática y vocabulario, los estudiantes todavía tenían un rendimiento bajo en la comprensión escrita y comprensión oral, lo que se podría remediar aplicando nuevas propuestas para abordar estas dos destrezas.
