Teaching Dracula's english in secondary school education

Abstract

Gran variedad de estudios han puesto de manifiesto la estrecha relación existente entre la práctica de la lectura constante y una mejora de las distintas destrezas básicas en idioma extranjero(reading, writing, listening, speaking and interaction). Las lecturas graduadas son la opción ideal para promocionar la lectura constante. Están adaptadas a alumnos de todos los niveles, por lo que cualquiera puede leerlas y subir o bajar de nivel a su conveniencia. Como cualquier herramienta educativa, el profesor debe saber como usarla, de manera que es importante que seleccione una lectura graduada en el nivel adecuado y tenga en cuenta los intereses de los alumnos, del mismo modo que les anima a extraer el significado de las palabras que no conocen a través del contexto. Las lecturas graduadas aumentan la motivación de los alumnos hacia el idioma extranjero al tiempo que les permite ser responsables de su propio proceso de aprendizaje.

A great variety of studies have shown that extensive reading is a practice directly connected to a large improvement when learning a second or a foreign language. Extensive reading not only implies improvement in the reading skill, but in the listening, speaking, writing and interaction skills. Graded readers are a very good option to promote extensive reading. They have been adapted with the FL/SL learners in mind and they are graded at different levels so that everyone is able to read them and move from one level to another easily. Like anything in life, in order to use a graded reader it is necessary to know how to do so. The teacher should choose the suitable level, take into account his or her students' preferences and encourage them to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context. Graded readers motivate students and let them organise their own learning process.
