Benefits of using authentic Material in communicative tasks in the EFL classroom

Los materiales auténticos son un valioso recurso para el aprendizaje de lenguas porque son ejemplos
reales de esas lenguas como las utilizan sus hablantes nativos. Son especialmente beneficiosos para las
tareas comunicativas porque fomentan la competencia comunicativa de los estudiantes. Muchos
académicos han hablado de la importancia de los materiales auténticos en la enseñanza de lenguas
extranjeras así como de los posibles inconvenientes que pueden surgir si no se utilizan correctamente.
Sin embargo, no existen estudios suficientes sobre el empleo de materiales auténticos con alumnos de
Educación Secundaria Obligatoria en Andalucía. Por tanto, este documento analiza estos beneficios a
través de la evaluación de los materiales auténticos de dos libros de texto de inglés como lengua
extranjera. Con los resultados se demostrará si estos materiales son variados y se emplean
adecuadamente con fines educativos y se destacarán las deficiencias de los materiales auténticos
incluidos en los libros de texto señalados.

These materials are particularly beneficial in communicative tasks, as they promote students’ communicative competence. Many academics have discussed the importance of authentic materials in foreign language teaching, as well as possible inconveniences which may arise if they are inappropriately used. However, there is not enough research about the use of authentic materials in students of Compulsory Secondary Education in Andalusia. Therefore, this paper analyses these benefits through the evaluation of authentic materials in two EFL coursebooks. Results will show if those authentic materials are varied and conveniently used for learning purposes and will highlight the weaknesses of the authentic materials included in those coursebooks.
