Resumen
Desde su descubrimiento en 1506 de forma inesperada, pocas obras de arte han marcado un punto de inflexión, así es el caso del Laocoonte y sus hijos. las fuentes literarias grecolatinas han sido las encargadas de transmitir la historia de Laocoonte, y poner en valor esta obra en todas sus dimensiones artísticas y culturales. Le favoreció el contexto histórico de Roma de Caput Mundi del mundo cristiano. Las corrientes religiosas verían pronto en el grupo escultórico un modelo a imitar, tomándolo pronto como referencia para la figuración de Cristo y mártires. El grupo ha estado en permanente cambio desde 1506 hasta que fuera restaurado en 1959 por Magi, pasando por su estancia en París, y su vuelta accidentada a Roma. Conocer el descubrimiento de Sperlonga, nos hará comprender la datación del grupo vaticano, así como los posibles contextos de un original en bronce, y del grupo escultórico en mármol.
Since its unexpected discovery in 1506, the statue of Laocoon and his Sons has reached a turning point, and only a few artworks in history have accomplished that. Graeco-Latin literary sources have transmitted the history of this Laocoon and they have valued the artistic and cultural dimensions of this artwork. lt benefited from the historical context of Rome it turned into the Caput Mundi of the christian world. Religious currents regarded this sculptural group as a model to follow. lt was seen as a reference to the figuration of Christ and martyrs. The sculptural group has undergone severa! changes since 1506 until its restoration in 1959 by Magi. lt also spent sorne time in París and it was returned to Rome in difficulties. Thanks to the discovery of Sperlonga, we will understand the dating of the Vatican group as well as the potential context of a bronze copy and the marble group.
