Enhancing motivation in the foreign language classroom

Resumen
[ES] En la actualidad, el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera es esencial para poder enfrentarse a las exigencias de un mundo en el que la globalización y la multiculturalidad se extienden con rapidez. Sin embargo, aunque conocemos la importancia de estudiar una segunda lengua, necesitamos tener deseo y disposición para aprenderla. Parece haber un consenso en el reconocimiento de la relevancia de la motivación como un factor crucial en el aprendizaje de lenguas. Por esto, este trabajo da cuenta de los diferentes estudios relacionados con la motivación que se han desarrollado, especialmente en el campo del aprendizaje de lenguas. Además, todas estas contribuciones parten de la premisa de que no es suficiente con generar motivación en nuestro alumnado, sino que es necesario mantenerla a lo largo de todo el proceso de aprendizaje. Por último, este proyecto culminará con una unidad didáctica diseñada para conseguir el propósito del mismo: aumentar la motivación en el aprendizaje de inglés.
[EN] Nowadays, learning a foreign language is essential to cope with the requirements of a world in which globalisation and multiculturality are rapidly spreading. Nonetheless, even though we know about the importance of studying a second language, we need to feel the desire and willingness to learn it. There seems to be a consensus in recognising the relevance of motivation as a crucial aspect in language learning. Therefore, this work offers an account on the various studies that have dealt with motivation in second language learning, analysing the various factors that are involved enhancing student’s motivation. Besides, all of these contributions depart from the premise that it is not enough to generate motivation, but it needs to be sustained throughout all the learning process. Finally, after providing a literature review on the subject matter, the project will culminate in a didactic proposal designed to achieve the target of the project: strengthen motivation in English learning.
