Charles Clifford nació en Reino Unido, aunque siendo muy joven se estableció en España donde residió y desarrolló su carrera artística. A lo largo del trabajo se ha considerado la procedencia de Clifford y sus posibles motivaciones. Clifford recorrió todo el territorio español desarrollando todo tipo de trabajos para diferentes entidades donde mostraba su carácter británico y aportaba su sensibilidad hacia el patrimonio cultural, además de introducir sus características artísticas en cada fotografía. Él buscaba crear una imagen de España y ésta debía ser lo más fidedigna posible, debido a motivos comerciales. Clifford fue uno de los primeros en crear y difundir los llamados libros de viajes, joyas artísticas que dada a su novedad se había convertido en una gran tendencia del siglo XIX. En definitiva Clifford abordo la España del siglo XIX expresando con detalle su patrimonio, sociedad, costumbres, cultura y arte, mediante sus trabajos fotográficos.
Charles Clifford was born in the United Kingdom, at an early age he moved to Spain where he lived and developed his artistic career. In the document, the origin of Clifford and his possible motivations have been considered. Clifford has traveled all the Spanish territory developing all kinds of works for different entities where he showed his British character and contributed his sensitivity towards cultural heritage, in addition to introducing his artistic characteristics in each photograph. He wanted to create an image of Spain and this it had to be as trustworthy as possible, due to commercial reasons. Clifford was one of the first to create, disseminate the travel books, artistic jewels that, given their novelty, had become a great trend of the 19th century. Definitely, Clifford describes the Spain of the nineteenth century expressing in detail its heritage, society, customs, culture and art, through his photographic works.
