Inteligencia Emocional y Liderazgo: un análisis prescriptivo

Abstract

El estudio sobre la Inteligencia Emocional es relativamente nuevo, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a cómo esta influye en el liderazgo. Sin embargo, en la actualidad se ha despertado un importante interés por la relación entre ambos conceptos, pues vivimos en una sociedad donde las emociones ocupan un papel primordial. El presente estudio pretende conocer si la percepción sobre un líder ideal se correspondería con un líder caracterizado por ser emocionalmente inteligente. Esto nos daría información sobre las teorías implícitas de liderazgo en cuanto a las habilidades emocionales. Para analizarlo se administró un cuestionario a 267 sujetos. Los resultados muestran que existen relaciones tanto positivas como negativas entre las diversas dimensiones de IE y los tipos de liderazgo. En concreto, se encuentra una relación positiva entre las dimensiones de IE y las habilidades de Liderazgo Transformacional, Transaccional y Ético. En cambio, hay una relación negativa entre las dimensiones de IE y el Liderazgo Laissez-Faire. Respecto a las diferencias de género en las percepciones sobre IE en el líder, no se producen diferencias estadísticamente significativas, es decir, existe una percepción similar entre hombres y mujeres sobre cómo debería ser un líder ideal. En cuanto a la influencia de la experiencia laboral en la percepción sobre el líder, tampoco se producen resultados significativos, esto podría explicarse por los fuertes estereotipos que se han construido al respecto.

The study about Emotional Intelligence is relatively new, especially with respect to how this affects leadership. However, today it has raised an important interest in the relationship between the two concepts, because we live in a society where emotions play a major role. This study aims to determine whether the perception of an ideal leader would correspond to a leader characterized as emotionally intelligent. This would give us information about the implicit theories of leadership in emotional skills. To analyze a questionnaire was administered to 267 subjects. The results show that there are both positive and negative relationships between the various dimensions of EI and types of leadership. In particular, there is a positive relationship between the dimensions of EI and skills of Transformational Leadership, Transactional and Ethics. Instead, there is a negative relationship between dimensions of EI and Laissez-Faire Leadership. Regarding gender differences in perceptions about EI in the leader, no statistically significant differences occur, that is, there is a similar perception between men and women on how a leader should be. As for the influence of work experience in the perception of the leader, it didn’t produce significant results, this could be explained by the strong stereotypes that have been built on the matter.
