Resumen
[ES]El ensayo tiene como objetivo principal estudiar el uso y la función de la mitología grecolatina en los relatos pertenecientes a dos obras del autor norteamericano Nathaniel Hawthorne, no muy conocidas: A wonder-Book for girls and boys (1852) y Tanglewood tales (1853). Se presta especial atención a la adaptación, en forma y contenido, de los episodios mitológicos empleados por Hawthrone en los dos libros referidos. Se proporciona un resumen de las historias incluidas y se realiza un análisis de su estructura, con especial atención a sus prefacios. También estudiamos la forma en la que el autor ha adaptado los mitos antiguos tomando como modelo el relato de Las Metamorfosis de Ovidio. Por último, hemos estudiado por qué Hawthorne utilizó la mitología grecolatina para componer dos libros de relatos infantiles. Dos son los motivos que justifican el uso de la mitología por parte de Hawthorne: transmitir los valores morales de los mitos antiguos a nuevas generaciones y entretener a un público infantil con "historietas" muy entretenidas de marcado carácter fantástico.
[EN]This eassy is aimed at studying the use and function of Greek and Latin mythology in the stories from Nathaniel Hawthrone's books A wonder-book for girls and boys (1852) and Tanglewood tales (1853), which are not son well-known. The paper will regard the author's main goal of transmitting the moral values from ancient myths to new generations. Special attention is devoted to de adaptation, in form and contents, of the mythological episodes used by Hawthorne in the books above mentioned. It will provide with a summary of the stories included and the analysis of the structure focusing on the preface. In some cases, it includes comparison between Ovid's Metamorphoses and Hawthorne's adaptation, to make explicit the canges undergone by the myths. Finally, the essay will comment on how the author manages to create tales our of myths. The two Hawthrone's aims in using mythology are: To transmit the moral values to next generation and to entertain the young readers with tales of fantastical nature.
