The Role of the Mother Tongue in the Learning of English as a Foreign Language: Transfer

Abstract

[EN]This project presents a bibliographical revision of some general issues in Applied Linguistics, such as Contrastive Analysis (CA), Error Analysis (EA) and Interlanguage Analysis (IA), which will help us understand the role of the mother tongue in the learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), as well as the different perspectives from which the concept of transfer has been viewed. Then, different levels of language will be introduced in order to describe how positive transfer and negative transfer (or interference) affect each particular level. Some methodological implications are also contemplated, to emphasize that the use of the mother tongue in the foreign language classroom should not be totally neglected, but that we can make use of it and it can be quite profitable.

[ES]Este proyecto presenta una revisión bibliográfica de algunos aspectos generales de la Lingüística Aplicada, tales como el análisis contrastivo (AC), el análisis de errores (AE) y el análisis de la interlengua (AI), que nos ayudan a entender el papel de la lengua materna en el aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera, así como las diferentes perspectivas tenidas en cuenta para el concepto de transferencia. Después, se introducirán los diferentes niveles de la lengua para así describir cómo la transferencia positiva o negativa (o interferencia) afectan a cada uno de los niveles. Se tendrán en cuenta algunas implicaciones metodológicas para enfatizar que el uso de la lengua materna en la clase de lengua extranjera no debería rechazarse totalmente sino que se puede hacer uso de ella, y puede ser muy útil.
