Teaching English to Immigrant Students in Spain: Changes, Challenges and Linguistic Politics.

Abstract

[ES] En el presente trabajo se hace una revisión bibliográfica para analizar, dentro de los programas de bilingüismo, la enseñanza-aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera a los alumnos inmigrantes que además desconocen la lengua oficial del país en el que se encuentran. El inglés se usa como lengua de instrucción en el aula. Este trabajo está estructurado en tres apartados; el primero de ellos, de carácter introductorio, esboza el problema ante el que se sitúa el docente de inglés, analizando los retos y cambios a los que se enfrenta; el segundo capítulo analiza la política lingüística que se desarrolla en los países de nuestro entorno y las acciones dirigidas a la integración del alumnado extranjero y a su formación lingüística. Por último, el tercero conecta las estrategias con los resultados y recopila los recursos que el profesorado de inglés puede usar en el aula para superar las dificultades de este alumnado.

[EN] The current project presents a bibliographic review in order to analyze, within bilingualism programs, the teaching-learning process of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to immigrant students who are not familiar with the official language of the country where they are living. EFL is used as the instruction language in the classroom. This piece of research is divided into three parts; the first is an introduction outlining the problem that English teachers face, analyzing the challenges and changes they must <leal with. The second chapter analyzes the language politics developed in the countries near Spain and the actions aimed at the integration of foreign students and at their language training. Finally, the third chapter connects strategies with results and collects the resources that English teachers can use in the classroom to overcome the difficulties foreign students struggle with.
