Gothic Female Writers. Ann Radcliffe

Abstract

[ES] El estilo gótico ha dejado una huella importante en todas las manifestaciones culturales de la humanidad. La típica arquitectura gótica llegó a ser considerada un personaje en sí mismo en la ficción gótica, junto con el ambiente sombrío, personajes que atraviesan una difícil agitación interior y una trama sorprendente, por sus idas y vueltas. Aún con todo, aparte del terror, el horror, el misterio, el asombro y el miedo, el sublimo y la sensibilidad, allí están las heroínas, impregnadas con los valores del incipiente feminismo, luchando una desigual batalla por su derecho a ser libre. El análisis de estos temas y motivos representan el objetivo del presente trabajo: describir cómo las características principales de la ficción gótica se reflejan en la obra de escritoras góticas como Ann Radcliffe y Emily Brontë. Este trabajo prestará especial atención a la primera, puesto que es la que abrió camino a las siguientes escritoras.[EN] Gothic style has left an important print on all the manifestations of human culture, ever since its beginnings. The typical architecture came to be considered a character in itself in the Gothic fiction, together with the gloomy atmosphere, characters undergoing difficult interior turmoil and a plot which surprises the readers with its twists and turns. In spite of the terror, horror, mystery, awe and fear, sublime and sensibility, there stand the heroines, imbued with values of incipient feminism, fighting and unequal battle for their right to be free. The analyses of these themes and motifs represent the aim of the present dissertation: describe how the main features of Gothic fiction mirror into the works of Ann Radcliffe and Emily Brontë. This dissertation will pay special attention to the former, as she is the one who paved the way for the next female writers.
