The Great Gatsby’s Social Picture

Abstract

[ES]El Gran Gatsby ha sido principalmente analizada hasta la fecha como una novela representativa del sueño americano. Sin embargo, no se han desarrollado numerosos análisis sociológicos de esta obra. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la novela como un documento representativo de la sociedad de la época de su publicación, la década de 1920. De este modo, siguiendo la teorías de dos coetáneos de Fitzgerald, los sociólogos Thorstein Veblen y Max Weber, analizaremos la estructura social de Gatsby, considerando a sus personajes principales como miembros (o aspirantes a serlo) representativos de la clase ociosa. Finalmente, a través del estudio de las acciones de los personajes, que se ven motivadas por el deseo mimético, en términos de René Girard, descubriremos la causa que motiva la conversión de Gatsby en el chivo expiatorio y víctima sacrificial de la clase ociosa al final de su historia.[EN]The Great Gatsby has mostly been analyzed from the perspective of depicting failure in fulfilling the American Dream. However, not many sociological approaches have been developed on the story of Gatsby. The aim of this research is to take the novel as a representational document of the social structure of the time of its publication, the 1920s. Thus, following the sociological treatises by Thorstein Veblen and Max Weber, both coetaneous to F. Scott Fitzgerald, we will study the social structure of Gatsby’s world, taking the main protagonists as representative members (or aspirants) of the leisure class. Finally, through the study of the characters’ actions, which we will see are driven by what the critic René Girard qualifies as mimetic desire, we will elucidate the reason behind Gatsby becoming the scapegoat and sacrificial victim of this social group at the end of the story.
