The comorbidity between bipolar disorder (BD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is high, producing more severe repercussions and an age of onset decrease of both disorders, which could increase the risk of suicide. In the present review work, the fundamental aspects of the dual diagnosis of BD and AUD will be addressed, beginning with the conceptualization and characterization of both disorders separately. Subsequently, the diagnostic criteria, explanatory hypotheses and neurobiological bases of the dual diagnosis will be addressed. Then, the defining features of it will be discussed, to conclude by indicating a series of risk and protective factors of the dual disorder.
