The present study investigates how academic debate can enhance students' language skills in English as a foreign language. A comparison is made with other European countries to assess how we can improve the Spanish education system in terms of English language teaching. Furthermore, a bibliographical review has been conducted on active methodologies that enhance student performance and learning. The results obtained from this research can inform English teachers and instructors of English-taught subjects on how to enhance fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and, ultimately, the four language skills: reading, speaking, writing, and listening.
