TEACHING MORAL VALUES THROUGH RUPI KAUR’S POETRY

Resumen
[ES] El objetivo de este Trabajo de Fin de Máster es desarrollar una unidad didáctica basada en el uso de la poesía para enseñar inglés como lengua extranjera. Para lograr este objetivo, la autora Rupi Kaur será usada como hilo conductor. Sus poemas son completamente accesibles para los estudiantes de 4o de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) del sistema educativo español. El alumnado practicará las cuatro competencias del lenguaje: lectura, escucha, expresión oral y expresión escrita a través de las actividades propuestas siguiendo siempre el uso de material auténtico, como es el caso de los textos literarios. Además, para contextualizar este enfoque, la primera parte de la disertación consiste en presentar los beneficios del uso de la literatura en la clase de inglés como lengua extranjera, así como las ventajas del uso de la poesía. Al hacer esto, se demuestra que no solo la literatura es adecuada y conveniente para el estudio de la lengua extranjera, sino que también lo es para enseñar aspectos culturales y valores imposibles de enseñar sin usar este tipo de material.

[EN] The aim of this MA dissertation is to develop a didactic unit based on the use of poetry to teach English as a foreign language. In order to reach this goal, the authoress Rupi Kaur will be used as a unifying thread. Her poems are completely accessible for students of the 4th year of Compulsory Education of the Spanish educational system. Students will practice the four language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing through the proposed activities always following authentic materials, which means using literary texts. Besides, in order to contextualize this approach, the first part of the dissertation is devoted to presenting the benefits of the use of literature in the EFL classroom as well as the advantages of the use of poetry. By doing that, we intend to demonstrate that not only is literature suitable and convenient for the study of a foreign language, but also for teaching cultural aspects and values impossible to teach without using this type of material.
