Comics to bond: didactic use of graphic literature in the EFL classroom

Abstract

Este Trabajo Fin de Máster ha sido diseñado con el propósito de valorar la literatura gráfica dentro de la enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera (ILE). Hay que subrayar la importancia de las habilidades comunicativas en la adquisición de una lengua extranjera. Sin embargo, es necesario también promover los recursos literarios para crear situaciones de aprendizaje significativas y adaptadas a la realidad presente. Además de aportar información multimodal (visual y textual), que facilita el rendimiento del alumnado, esta situación de aprendizaje puede incrementar la motivación de los estudiantes de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO), utilizando materiales que no pertenecen necesariamente al mundo educativo, pero que conforman material auténtico en la lengua extranjera, adaptándose así a las necesidades de dichos estudiantes. En consecuencia, la novela gráfica Heartstopper ha sido aquí considerada como adecuada para una situación de aprendizaje. En este trabajo se abordan temas que son familiares a los estudiantes adolescentes, al mismo tiempo que se promueven valores como el respeto y la aceptación de la diversidad.

This master’s degree final project has been designed with the purpose of granting value to graphic literature within the Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL). The importance of communicative skills in the acquisition of a foreign language must be emphasized, yet it is also essential to promote the literary values by means of related resources, in order to create more meaningful and real-life learning situations. In addition to providing multimodal (visual and textual) input, which promotes learning outcomes, students of Compulsory Secondary Education (CSE) will hopefully increase their motivation in a favourable atmosphere with materials that do not necessarily belong to the educational world, yet they conform authentic material in the foreign language, in this way adapting to the needs of the students. Consequently, the graphic novel Heartstopper has been considered here as suitable for a learning-based scenario. The author addresses topics that are familiar to the teenage students, while promoting values such as respect and acceptance of diversity.
