EXPORTACIÓN Y DESARROLLO ECONÓMICO: EL CASO DE LA BANANA ORGÁNICA EN LA REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA

Abstract

[ES] A lo largo de la historia, el comercio internacional ha tenido diferentes consecuencias para las naciones que en él han participado. Mientras que su contribución al avance de las más industrializadas es fácilmente palpable, sus efectos en los países menos favorecidos no son siempre tan sencillos de apreciar. En este marco, las exportaciones se han convertido en un importante instrumento para el desarrollo de muchos de esos países que, especializándose en los bienes y servicios donde cuentan con cierta ventaja comparativa, han encontrado en ellas una posible vía de mejora de su nivel de vida. Este trabajo explora la realidad de un mercado tan representativo como es el de la exportación de bananas orgánicas en la República Dominicana, para descubrir cómo dicha actividad ocupa un puesto clave en el desarrollo socioeconómico del país, impactando positivamente en los trabajadores, en las comunidades locales y en el medio ambiente.

[EN] Throughout history, international trade has had various consequences for the nations that have participated in it. While its contribution to the welfare of the most developed ones is easily noticeable, its effects in the less favoured countries are not always as simple to recognize. In this context, exports have become an important tool for the development of many of these countries that, by specializing themselves in the goods and services in which they have certain comparative advantage, have found a possible way to enhance their living standards. This paper explores these realities through a representative market: the export of organic bananas from the Dominican Republic, and its key role in the socioeconomic development of the country, having a positive impact on the workforce, on the local communities and on the environment as a whole.
