[EN] The aim of this paper is to identify the main aspects to be considered in the elaboration of an animal welfare protocol (AWP) for Dog Assisted Intervention (DAI/IAP in Spanish) activities. After establishing the main concepts related to animal welfare and AAI, a literature review was carried out, which allowed the elaboration of a proposal for an AWP model to be applied in IAP activities. As a result, evaluation criteria were developed and validated by its comparison to a protocol currently used by a Spanish organization dedicated to IAP. This whole process allowed us to conclude that there is a broad scientific basis of evidence supporting the importance and potential benefits of using animal welfare protocols in IAP activities, highlighting the fundamental role they play in maintaining the welfare of the intervention dogs.
