The Bluestockings and their “Queen”: Elizabeth Montagu?

Abstract

[ES] Ser una mujer intelectual en el siglo XVIII implicaba todo un reto . El propósito de este trabajo de fin de máster es demostrar por qué Elizabeth Montagu, miembro más relevante del grupo de literatas de la época conocido como “Las Bluestockings”, era considerada como la “reina” el mismo. Utilizando una gran variedad de documentación, este estudio pretende no solo analizar el origen del término y su evolución en relación a su significado durante el período, sino también proporcionar una visión sobre las mujeres más relevantes que conformaron la primera y segunda generación de este movimiento. Este estudio, por lo tanto, responde a la pregunta de cómo el rol de Elizabeth Montagu como anfitriona, mujer de negocios, conversadora y patrocinadora al mismo tiempo que organizadora de las mejores fiestas y reuniones en sus casas, eclipsó su papel como literata, destacando más por su simpatía que por su producción literaria.

[EN] Being both a woman and an intellectual in the 18th century was a question of challenge. The purpose of this Master ́s Dissertation is to prove why Elizabeth Montagu, one of the most relevant members belonging to the 18th century group, known as the Bluestockings, was considered to be “The Queen of the Blues”. Using a wide variety of research, this study not only analyses the origin of the term and the evolution of its meaning throughout the period, but it also provides a supporting and insightful documentation regarding the most important women conforming the first and second generation of this group as well as their literary contribution to the movement. This study, however, answers the question of how Montagu’s role as a businesswoman, conversationalist, sponsor as well as hostess of the best parties and gatherings at her houses eclipsed her role as a woman of letters shining more due to her sympathy and charm towards others instead of her literary production.
