The scribal formula “Qui scripsit carmen sit Benedictus amen”: study of its origin and development

Abstract

[ES] En este trabajo final de Máster se realiza un estudio de la fórmula latina usada en colofones Qui scripsit carmen sit benedictus amen. La fórmula parece haber estado activa entre los siglos XIII y XV y es especialmente frecuente en manuscritos de origen inglés. Tras elaborar un corpus de manuscritos que la contienen, se realiza un estudio estadístico de su uso para esclarecer su origen, difusión espacial y temporal y posibles variantes. Se concluye que la probabilidad de que la formula tenga un origen inglés es alta.

[EN] This MA dissertation is a study of the Latin formula Qui scripsit carmen sit benedictus amen used by scribes in colophons. This formula seems to have been active from the 13th to the 15th centuries and is especially frequent in English manuscripts. After creating a corpus of manuscripts containing the formula, a statistical study of its instances will shed light on its origin, dissemination and possible variants. The study concludes that the possibility of an English origin for this formula is high.
