It’s not rocket science! A learner-corpus based study of NPs at B1 and B2 levels and a proposal of a didactic unit for Spanish students of EFL in 4th CSE

Abstract

[ES]El sintagma nominal en inglés ha sido objeto de investigación en los últimos años. Se ha demostrado que una de las características principales del lenguaje académico es la presencia de sintagmas nominales complejos modificados por otros sintagmas. El principal objetivo de este Trabajo Fin de Máster es conocer si los estudiantes españoles de inglés como lengua extranjera muestran este nivel de complejidad en los niveles B1 y B2 (MCERL) además de identificar las principales diferencias entre estos dos niveles de competencia. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un estudio basado en un corpus de 48 textos escritos por estudiantes españoles y se ha creado una unidad didáctica llamada It’s not rocket science! basada en los resultados obtenidos. El objetivo principal de esta es mejorar las habilidades orales y escritas de los estudiantes a través del uso de sintagmas nominales complejos con pre-modificación y post-modificación, todo esto mientras se aborda la igualdad de género en el ámbito de la ciencia.

[EN]The English Noun Phrase has received increasing research attention in the last years, showing that complex noun phrases with phrasal modifiers is one of the main characteristics of academic writing. The main aim of this dissertation is to know whether Spanish EFL learners show this level of phrasal complexity at B1 and B2 levels (CEFR) and the main differences between both proficiency levels. Therefore, a corpus-based study based on 48 texts written by Spanish students has been carried out. A didactic unit called It’s not rocket science! has been designed on the basis of the results extracted from the analysis. The main objective of this didactic unit is to improve the students’ oral and written skills through the use of complex NPs with both pre- and postmodification while addressing gender equality in the field of science
