Teaching american english in compulsory secondary education

Abstract

El principal objetivo de este ensayo es explicar cómo se puede enseñar Inglés Americano en institutos de enseñanza secundaria donde siempre se ha enseñado Inglés Británico. Para ése propósito, se explicará en detalle el origen del inglés americano, así como las diferencias más relevantes en cuestiones de pronunciación, ortografía, léxico y gramática entre estas dos variedades del inglés, inglés británico y americano. Además, una unidad didáctica, cuyo tema es ¡Ver series!, ilustrará cómo estas diferencias mencionadas anteriormente pueden ser enseñadas a los estudiantes de forma interesante e interactiva.

This essay is aimed at explaining how American English can be also taught in secondary schools where British English has been the common variety learnt by students for a long time. For that purpose, the origin of American English will be explained in detail, as well as the most outstanding differences between these two English varieties, BrE and AmE, in pronunciation, spelling, lexis and grammar. Moreover, a lesson plan, whose topic is Watching series!, will illustrate how some of the differences mentioned previously can be taught to students in an interesting and interactive way.
