PROMOTING PLURILINGUALISM IN THE EFL CLASSROOM:

Abstract

En las últimas décadas, la lengua inglesa ha obtenido una posición privilegiada, adoptando el papel de lengua franca del mundo y fomentando un entusiasmo por el aprendizaje de idiomas sin precedente. Por lo tanto, nuestro papel como profesores de idiomas es asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes adquieren las habilidades lingüísticas apropiadas para ser capaces de responder a las demandas lingüísticas del mundo, no sólo en inglés sino también en otros idiomas. Las políticas lingüísticas europeas, nacionales y regionales intentan, por un lado, desarrollar las competencias de los estudiantes, y, por otro lado, fomentar la unidad entre pueblos diferentes para poder ayudar a la construcción de una identidad europea. En consecuencia, se promueve el aprendizaje de idiomas diferentes además de reforzar la adquisición de habilidades comunicativas interculturales. En este contexto, hemos desarrollado una unidad didáctica que fomenta el aprendizaje de idiomas diferentes desde la propia clase de inglés como lengua extranjera, al mismo tiempo que desarrolla temas transversales entre los estudiantes de Bachillerato.

Over the last decades, the English language has gained a privileged position, adopting the role of the world’s Lingua Franca and fostering a language learning enthusiasm without precedent. It is therefore our role as language educators to ensure that our students acquire the appropriate language skills to be able to respond to the world’s linguistic demands not only in English, but also in other languages. European, national and regional language policies are, on the one hand, aiming to develop students’ communicative competences, and, on the other hand, to increase unity between different peoples in order to help in the construction of a European identity. As a result of this, the learning of different languages is encouraged and the acquisition of intercultural communication skills is reinforced. In this context, we have developed a didactic unit that promotes the learning of different languages from the EFL classroom itself while developing interdisciplinary aspects amongst students of Non-Compulsory Secondary Education.
