The following review will try to collect many of the most important findings in relation to the study of the different structures and neural pathways that participate and regulate all processes in relation to creativity and imagination. Some of them, such as the hippocampus (specifically the anterior hippocampus) modeling scenes during imagination and recall. Others such as the left frontal gyrus or the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex also participate in creative thinking, creating an opposite activation between both structures, the first being more activated in flexibility for divergent thinking and the second more activated in the persistence of convergent thinking. Other structures such as the amygdala are very important when imagining mental images among other creative functions. Finally, many findings have shown that, apart from the structures already mentioned, the main dopaminergic pathways regulate most of the creative processes.
