A theoretical study of english verb-particle constructions and its practical application to two specialized dictionaries

Abstract

[EN]Verb-Particle (or Phrasal Verbs) combinations have always been a problematic subject matter within English linguistic studies, especially for foreign speakers. Therefore, this essay is aimed at providing a brief description of the English Verb-Particle constructions according to our own analysis and views and based on the distinct theories that some authors have proposed about it. Hence, as a practical activity, we will then analyze how these combinations are treated within two specialized dictionaries taking the theoretical analysis as a basis: the Oxford Dictionary of Current Idiomatic English, Volume 1: Verbs with Prepositions and Particles and the Cambridge Phrasal Verbs Dictionary.[ES]Las construcciones de Verbo más Partícula (o Verbos Frasales) han resultado ser un tema problemático dentro de los estudios lingüísticos de la lengua inglesa, especialmente para los hablantes extranjeros. Por ello, el objeto de este ensayo es el de proporcionar una descripción breve de las construcciones de Verbo más Partícula inglesas de acuerdo con nuestro propio análisis y basado en las diferentes teorías que algunos autores han propuesto sobre ellas. Por consiguiente, como actividad prácticas, analizaremos después cómo tratan dos diccionarios especializados estas construcciones, tomando como criterio el análisis teórico ya realizado: el Oxford Dictionary of Current Idiomatic English, Volume 1: Verbs with Prepositions and Particles y el Cambridge Phrasal Verbs Dictionary.
