A global energy transition without precedents is on the way. However, it should be accelerated in order to reduce the effects of climate change. Intended to contribute to a local scale to combat the challenges associated with energy issues and their implications for a sustainable future, this paper proposes the creation of a renewable energies laboratory for research, development and demonstration to promote sustainable energy transition in the region of Aysén, Patagonia, Chile. In addition, this work has developed a multi-criteria and quantitative methodology to select the renewable energy technologies which are more coherent to investigate in a specific territory, and it shows the need to explore new paradigms of development based on sustainable energy systems.
