THE USE OF LITERATURE IN THE EFL CLASSROOM. AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH THROUGH MODERNIST LITERATURE.

Abstract

[ES]El objeto de este Trabajo de Fin de Máster es, tras comprobar que hay una necesidad de mejorar el nivel de conocimientos de literatura y los hábitos de lectura entre los alumnos de educación secundaria española, aunar el conocimiento del campo de la literatura y el conocimiento de la lengua inglesa. La primera parte de este trabajo ofrece un marco teórico sobre el tema, incluyendo una revisión de la literatura y del marco legislativo español para comprobar la viabilidad de este proyecto. La segunda parte consta de una breve investigación sobre el conocimiento e interés por la literatura, así como los hábitos de lectura de los alumnos españoles en el último curso de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y en la etapa de Bachillerato, para así establecer la conveniencia real del presente proyecto. Finalmente, se ofrece una propuesta didáctica a través de un enfoque integrativo en el que se combina el “Reader Response Approach” y el Enfoque Estilístico. Asimismo, este trabajo incluye una unidad didáctica para el curso de 1º de Bachillerato, en el que se trata el poema “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” (1916) del autor modernista T. S. Eliot.

[EN]The aim of this Master’s Dissertation is, after ascertaining that there is a need to improve the knowledge of literature and reading habits among Spanish secondary students, to unify the knowledge of literature and the knowledge of the English language. The first of this study is dedicated to providing a theoretical framework on this topic, in which a literature review is included as well as a curricular framework so as to check the viability of this project. The second part contains a brief piece of research on the knowledge and interest towards literature, as well as the reading habits of Spanish secondary learners at the level of 4th year of ESO and the stage of Bachillerato, in order to establish the real convenience of this project. The last part of this paper is dedicated to offering a teaching proposal through an integrative approach which combines the Reader Response Approach and the Stylistic Approach. Moreover, this study includes a learning unit, based on the theoretical framework provided, for the 1st year of Bachillerato, dealing with the modernist author T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” (1916).
