An Initial Descriptive Approach to English Glides in the 21st. Century

Abstract

El objetivo principal que persigue el siguiente trabajo es el estudio y el análisis de las diferentes variedades del inglés, concretamente el inglés británico y el inglés americano en lo que afecta al sistema fonético de los diptongos, teniendo en cuenta las diferentes variedades de un mismo territorio y el número de hablantes que tienden a producir dicho sonido en la actualidad. De acuerdo con autores como David Crystal, A.C. Gimson y Geoff Lindsey, se establecerá la descripción del inglés británico, mientras que para el análisis comparativo entre el inglés británico y el inglés americano se analizará bajo las premisas establecidas por el reconocido diccionario Longman de pronunciación del inglés. Por último, se finalizará este trabajo con una conclusión cuyo objetivo principal es destacar los resultados obtenidos del análisis, así como reflexionar sobre el futuro de la lengua inglesa como una lengua internacional.The main objective of this piece of work is the study and analysis of different varieties of English, especially British English and American English varieties as regards the phonetic system of diphthongs due to the different varieties within the same territory and the number of speakers who produce such sounds today. Thanks to authors such as David Crystal, A.C. Gimson and Geoff Lindsey, the description of British English will be presented, whereas the comparative analysis between British English and American English will be undertaken, departing from the outstanding Longman English Pronunciation Dictionary (LEPD). Finally, this work will close with a conclusion whose main objective is to highlight the results obtained from the analysis, as well as to take into account the future of the English language as an international language.
